As expected, in the wake of Computex 2014 show in Taipei Intel has officially launches its new desktop CPUs, Intel Devil's Canyon and Pentium Anniversary Edition overclockable CPUs. As noted, the lineup includes three new CPUs, the Devil's Canyon Core i7-4790K and Core i5-4690K as well as the new Pentium Anniversary Edition G3258.
Although based on existing Haswell architecture, the three new CPUs are quite a different beasts. As Intel clarified earlier, these CPUs will have much higher overclocking headroom, mostly thanks to a new thermal interface material (TIM) as well as more capacitors to provide more stable power delivery with higher TDP.
According to Intel's official slide, Intel did not go back to flux-less solder seen earlier with the Sandy Bridge but rather opted for the "next-generation Polymer Thermal Interface Material (NGPTIM), which should transfer the heat between the die and the metal heatspreader protecting the die. The new TIM is not the only update as the Devil's Canyon lineup has additional capacitors which should "smooth power delivery to the die", according to Intel, and which results in a higher 88W TDP rating for these two SKUs.
As far as the specification go, the Core i7-4970K is a quad-core part with enabled Hyper-Threading, 4.0GHz base clock and 4.4GHz Max Turbo clock, 8MB of L3 cache, Intel HD 4600 Graphics clocked at 1250MHz and the aforementioned 88W TDP. The Core i5-4690K is also a quad-core part but lacks Hyper-Threading. It has a 3.5GHz base CPU clock, 3.9GHz Max Turbo CPU clock, 6MB of L3 cache, Intel HD 4600 Graphics clocked at 1200MHz and the same 88W TDP.
According to Intel, Devil's Canyon CPUs will be compatible with Intel's 9-series chipsets, although they should be compatible with the same socket as all current Haswell-based CPUs. The reason lies in the fact that some motherboards might have a problem with the 88W TDP and would also require a firmware update.
The last but definitely not the least is the new Intel Pentium Anniversary Edition G3258 CPU, released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Pentium brand. This dual-core, Hyper-Threading and Intel Turbo Boost lacking part, is still based on Haswell architecture, has 3.2GHz base clock, 3MB of L3 cache and a 53W.
It is still not clear on how much more overclocking potential will Devil's Canyon SKUs offer but hopefully we will see some first overclocking results soon. The Core i7-4790K should have a US $339 price tag, the Core i5-4690K should end up with a US $242 price while the Pentium G3258 will have a US $72 price tag.
