Renesas Electronics has announced a new USB 3.0 hub controller, the uPD720211, which features dual downstream ports and provides more flexibility to implement USB 3.0 to more digital devices including PCs, tablets, and digital TVs.
The new uPD720211 will be a complement to Renesas' lineup that includes the world's first certified USB 3.0 four port hub controller and is aimed at devices that are limited with space, thus bringing the USB 3.0 to more mobile devices.
The new two-port hub controller feature a quad flat no-lead (QFN) package and integrated a voltage step-down regulator as well as peripheral components required for rapid charging. It also has a quite small power consumption of around 5mW in low power mode and around 350mW in USB 3.0 mode.
According to Renesas, the new uPD720211 two-port hub controller will be available in October 2013 while mass production is expected in February 2014 with combined production of 1,000,000 units per month by April 2014.
