Toshiba victim of Ransomware

Production suspended for a few weeks

Speaking about big companies affected by a Ransomware, we can now add Toshiba to the list. During the past months several large companies announced that they were affected by Ransomware and amongst them were giants like Renault and Nissan. Since Toshiba is one of the world’s largest supplier for NAND flash memory, this will most certainly have an effect on pricing, since the production had to be suspended.

Toshiba decided to shut down the production for 3-6 weeks in order to deal with this Ransomware issue. The world's NAND flash market was supposed to see improvements to the undersupply situation, but with Toshiba’s entire production line shut down current market supply won’t be saturated. Due to new smartphones that are usually revealed this time a year and also due to growth in the server market, the demand for NAND flash chips has been on the increase for quite a while now and chip makers struggle to keep up with it.

Add to that the demand from end-customers, which is strong as well and it’s going to peak in this quarter. All things considered this will most certainly lead to prices increasing again and everything that contains NAND flash chips will be affected. Hopefully the situation will get better by the end of the year again.
