ASUS officially announces R9 285 Strix graphics card

AMD 28nm Tonga GPU and Strix cooler

Following the official launch and availability of AMD's Radeon R9 285 graphics card based on 28nm Tonga Pro GPU with 1792 Stream Processors, ASUS has announced its Radeon R9 285 Strix graphics card.

Based on a custom design with an 8-phase VRM, drawing power from two 6-pin PCIe connectors, and featuring the same Strix cooler, which we had a chance to see on both the ASUS 780 Strix as well as the GTX 750 Ti Strix graphics card, the new ASUS R9 285 will definitely be one of the more interesting R9 285 based graphics cards on the market.

As noted, the ASUS R9 285 Strix is based on AMD's 28nm Tonga Pro GPU and packs 1792 Stream Processors, 112 TMUs, 32 ROPs as well as a 256-bit memory interface connected to a 2GB of GDDR5 memory.

ASUS decided that the Strix cooler is enough to keep the ASUS R9 285 Strix OC Edition graphics card cooled at factory-overclocked GPU clocks of 954MHz while 2GB of GDDR5 memory ended up working at 1375MHz (5.5GHz effective). There will be a standard edition of the ASUS R9 285 Strix on the market set to work at reference 918MHz for the GPU.

The main feature of the ASUS R9 285 Strix is definitely its dual-slot, dual-fan Strix cooler that takes a lot from ASUS' well known DirectCU II cooler but does not actually spin up until GPU hits certain temperature, in case of the ASUS R9 285 Strix around 55°C.

ASUS did not reveal any details regarding the price of these two new models but you can expect them to hit retail/e-tail shelves with a price of around US $249 / €249 for the standard version and around US $10/€10 for the OC Edition.
