As you already probably know, during Google I/O 2014, the company has announced the Android TV, which, according to Google, is not a new platform but a new form-factor which will be supported by Android. While there are quite a few manufacturers on the list for Android TV, we were quite surprised to see that Razer is among the first to embrace it with its own set-top box.
While the Android TV will be launch on multiple different form-factors, the most interesting are probably set-top boxes and TVs. Among the list of manufacturers that will be among the first to embrace the Android TV, Razer is probably the biggest surprise with its own mini set-top box. The big part of the Android TV announcement at Google I/O 2014 was dedicated to gaming on Android TV, among other things, we guess that this will be Razer's focus with this set-top box.
While it still did not talk about any specific hardware details, Razer has recently managed to squeeze some pretty decent hardware into a small form-factor with previous products so we guess that this set-top box will not be much different. The company also announced that the device will be affordable and should be ready this fall.
While Razer calls it the "mini console", we do think that set-top box is a bit more appropriate term considering that it will not come close to a proper console, as after all, it will be focused at gaming on Android platform.
“This is a console of the future,” Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO said in a statement. “Built on Google’s incredible Android TV platform, the Razer micro-console incorporates not only hardcore and casual gaming, but music, movies and other entertainment and social applications, all on an affordable system.”
