AMD preparing Catalyst 14.6 Beta drivers

Bringing new Eyefinity and improvements

Following the launch of Ubisoft's new Watch Dogs game, AMD has released its newest AMD Catalyst 14.6 Beta driver which brings a couple of performance optimizations for the aforementioned game as well as some other updates for AMD Mantle API, Eyefinity and more.

The performance improvements of the new Catalyst 14.6 Beta driver are mostly focused on Ubisoft's Watch Dogs game and include single-card optimizations with over 25 percent performance improvement as well as Crossfire profile for the game in case you are running more than one graphics card. In addition to the Watch Dogs, the new driver also brings some optimizations for the upcoming Murdered: Soul Suspect game scheduled to be released next week.

In addition to the various performance improvements, the new AMD Catalyst 14.6 Beta driver also bring a couple of other updates for AMD Mantle API, some major Eyefinity improvements and expanded color control capabilities. As far as the Mantle is concerned, the new driver brings support for it on Enduro configurations as well as multi-GPU support for Thief, which now support Crossfire with Mantle.

The biggest update with the new Catalyst 14.6 Beta driver is about AMD Eyefinity, which got updated to version 3.0. The new Eyefinity now brings support for mixed resolutions. While it was previously limited to resolution of the lowest-resolution display, the Eyefinity now allows you to mix displays with different native resolutions and does that in three new modes, the Fit mode, Expand mode and the Fill mode. The Eyefinity Fit mode forces vertical pixel to be kept at the same number by hiding the area of a higher-resolution display. The Expand mode on the other hand focuses on higher-resolution display and thus creating unavailable areas on left and right displays. The third one, Fill mode, focuses on native resolutions of the displays without any unavailable areas.

AMD also made some changes to the UI of its Catalyst Control Center as well as added more video color and color depth managements controls.

The new Catalyst 14.6 Beta driver is expected to be available sometime next month and we certainly hope that these will be available sooner rather than later in June.
