Razer paid US $380,000 for green USB ports

On Blade notebooks

While it is quite obvious, by looking at their US $2,000+ starting price, that new Razer Blade and Blade Pro notebooks are reserved for premium market, little custom things on both notebooks, like green USB 3.0 ports, cost a lot to research and develop. Razer ended ended up paying US $380,000 in research, development and testing for those same green USB 3.0 ports.

In case you missed it earlier, Razer has updated its Blade and Blade Pro notebooks with new GPUs and other hardware, while the 14-inch Blade even got IGZO/IPS panel with impressive 3200x1800 resolution. What we did not know is that the company had to spend a rather incredible US $380,000 in research, development and hardware in order to change the color of USB 3.0 ports from blue to Razer green.

To make things even more incredible, Razer did not do anything to USB as hardware but simply replaced the color of the plastic in the middle of the USB port. Certain motherboard manufacturers as well as Apple, which changed the USB color to white, have done it before but Razer had to go an extra mile since green USB ports simply did not exist.

In order to get things done the proper way, Razer had to find a manufacturer which will not, or rather could not, sell the "acidic green" USB ports to other manufacturers and make sure that the quality is on a proper level. Apparently all of that costs quite a penny, or to be precise, US $380,000.

We must agree that it gives it a certain premium feel and we can definitely appreciate Razer's attention to detail as after all those two are far from being cheap notebooks.
