Announced during the end of last year, the new 6TB HDD from HGST, which are filled with helium, have now appeared listed in two retail/e-tail shops.
Although we have been hearing about these new HGST Ultrastar 6TB drives for quite some time, it was only this week that they appeared in retail/e-tail shops and by the looks of it, these are just early availability listings and there is still no word on general availability.
The HGST Ultrastar 6TB SATA 7200rpm model with 64MB of cache has appeared at
Amazon with a price set at US $798 and with stock of 9 units. The SAS model appeared in limited quantities for a rather steep US $895 at
DiscountTechnology. If you take a look at the price per GB, you end up at around US $0.13 for the 6TB model.
Although these are still cheaper than SSDs, they do not really have the same use. Their power consumption is set at 5.3W idle, 3.7W hibernation and 7.3W read/write.
We just need to wait for a bit longer and we will see a few reviews.
