Back when AMD launched its very first DirectX 10 graphics card, it has created the Radeon HD xyz0 naming scheme that we really got used to and where, "x" marked the generation, "y" was market segment and "z" was a variant inside that market segment, but now AMD has decided to change things up a bit with the launch of Volcanic Islands GPU family and the new "Radeon Ry xz" i naming scheme.
According to Techpowerup, the Ry xz i, will be quite similar to the previous naming scheme although at a different placing. For example the "y" will still represent the market segment, "xz" will hold the model number while "i" will represent a special feature. The example for the naming scheme is most easily described by putting the Radeon HD 7900 series in the new naming scheme that would translate to Radeon R9 280 X, where 9 represents the high-end segment, "2" indicating generation and "80" showing that it is a "XT" chip while "Pro" could end up with 60, 70 or even 50 depending on where AMD wants to place it.
Mobile parts could get the similar treatment but with a M-prefix before the "xz" model number (for example, Radeon R9 M380 X). The new naming scheme has been showing up in the GPU-Z validation page for days and it shows that AMD is probably gearing up for the 25th of September Hawaii event where it will show its new Volcanic Islands GPU to the press.
