MSI rolls out world's thinnest 17-inch gaming notebook

Grabs the title from Razer Blade Pro

MSI has managed to snag the "world's thinnest and lightest gaming notebook" title from Razer's Blade Pro system by releasing the MSI GS70. Previously seen at Computex back in June, the GS70 features an all aluminum chassis and weighs in at mere 2.58kg (5.7lbs) which is quite a success considering that it is a 17-inch gaming system that has some impressive specifications.

The full dimensions are set at 41.8x28.7x2.2cm and it weighs 2.58kg (5.73lbs). As it is slightly thinner than Razer Blade Pro we must say that we are impressed, especially since MSI managed to squeeze in Intel's HM87 chipset paired up with Haswell quad-core Core i7-4700HQ CPU that works at 2.4GHz base clock, 3.4GHz Turbo clock and packs 6MB of L2 cache, 16GB of DDR3-1600 memory in two SO-DIMM slots and Nvidia Geforce GTX 765M GPU with 2GB of GDDR5 memory.

In case you missed it before, the Geforce GTX 765M is based on Nvidia's 28nm GK106 GPU, packs 768 CUDA cores and mostly works at 797MHz base, 863MHz Boost GPU clocks while 2GB of GDDR5 memory, connected to a 128-bit memory interface, is usually clocked at 4008MHz.

To be quite honest, MSI GS70 looks like a decent gaming rig and when it thin profile is taken into account, it certainly looks more appealing than the Razer Blade Pro. It's 17.3-inch 1920x1080 screen and full-size SteelSeries backlit keyboard only add a certain level of quality. The rest of the MSI GS70 specifications and features include Killer E2200 game networking for LAN and Bluetooth as well as Killer N1202 2x2 802.11abgn WiFi, four USB 3.0 ports, HDMI 1.4 and mini-DisplayPort outputs, 720p webcam and a 6-cell battery.

It will be available in two SKUs in the States with either two 128GB mSATA SSDs in RAID 0 as well as 1TB HDD or with 128GB mSATA SSD and 750GB HDD. The best side of the story is that it is quite less expensive than the Razer Blade Pro which starts at US $2,299.99. The cheaper MSI GS70 SKU with 128GB SSD and 750GB HDD will be available at US $1,799.99 while the one with 256GB of SSDs in RAID 0 and 1TB HDD will go for US $1,999.99.
