ASMedia has been known to be quite popular with its third-party USB 3.0 controllers before motherboard chipsets actually started to integrate it and it has now started to talk about the upcoming USB 3.5 scheduled to appear sometime during next year.
According to details released by ASMedia, the bandwidth has been doubled which is pretty much the reason for the USB 3.5 name. Previous updates to USB interface offered up to 10 times increase in bandwidth while this one will bring 10Gbps which double the transfer speed of USB 3.0.
The 10Gbps transfer speed will put it head to head with Thunderbolt which, despite its 2-year headstart, still has to make a more an impact since it is simply more expensive than the USB 3.0. With the introduction of USB 3.5, Thunderbolt might be in for some rough time.
