Sapphire unveils Gearbox eGFX

Featuring Thunderbolt 3 port

With the Gearbox eGFX, Sapphire adds its first external GPU case, which is compatible with both NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards. This product is perfect for everyone who wishes more performance in combination with notebooks, Mac Pros or small form factor PCs, which feature a Thunderbolt 3 port.

The Gearbox eGFX comes with an Intel Thunderbolt 3 connection, which means you can connect it to any recent notebook or mini-PC in order to boost its 3D performance. Sapphire isn't the first one to come up with an external case for graphics cards. A few months back Razer announced their so called Razer Core enclosure, offering the same functionality and on top of that there are identical solutions for quite a few other vendors.

According to the product page Sapphire's Gearbox eGFX is compatible with any recent AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards, although cards are not to be taller than 2 slots and longer than 266mm. Inside the unit there is a 500W power supply, which is suitable for any up-to-date graphics card. The maximum GPU power consumption is still capped at 300W.

The rear part of the box also comes with a set of useful connectors. There are two USB 3.0 ports, one Thunderbolt 3 port and one Ethernet 10/100/1000 port. The Sapphire GearBox Thunderbolt 3 eGFX is available as a barebone or with special combo package. The barebone version costs $339 US, while the combo package with a Sapphire RX 580 graphics card goes for $580 US. For more information we suggest to check the official site.
