ASUS unveils Prime X399-A motherboard

Based on E-ATX form factor

ASUS has revealed the full specifications of its Prime X399-A motherboard. A few months ago, during Computex 2017, ASUS unveiled their first two AMD X399 based motherboards which are compatible with the AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper processors. Meanwhile it looks like the company is ready to introduce this new platform.

Today we have a look at the ASUS X399 Prime X399-A motherboard, which packs the new AMD TR4 socket, eight DDR4 DIMM slots and several new features. The motherboard is based on an E-ATX form factor featuring RGB backlight underneath each heat sink and there are steel reinforcements on the PCIe slots. In general the layout is similar to the other high-end motherboards and therefore there are four full-sized PCIe 3.0 x16 slots and two PCIe x1 slots.

On the storage side, the X399 Prime X399-A features a single U.2 port, two M.2 slots and six angled SATA ports. The first M.2 slot is placed in the middle of the motherboard and the second one is in the bottom area. While the first one is hidden underneath a removable cover, the other one can be vertically mounted in the center of the PCB. We don’t like this approach too much and we would prefer to see all M.2 drives horizontally mounted due to the fact, that vertically mounted drives can be broken out of the slot they’re in.

According to a picture shot at Computex 2017, looking at the external connectors directly at the I/O-panel, ASUS equipped the X399 Prime as well as the X399-A motherboard with eight USB 3.1 Gen1 ports and two USB 3.1 Gen2 ports. Furthermore there is one Intel Gigabit Ethernet port and an analogue audio panel with optical out.
