NVIDIA has finally been hosting a livestream announcing their new high-end GTX 1080 Ti graphic card. The new flagship model features 3584 CUDA Cores, 224 Texture Units, a 352-bit memory controller and 11 GB of GDDR5X memory. The card should be faster than a reference Titan X Pascale and 30% faster compared than the GeForce GTX 1080.
So far there aren't any details regarding custom cards from NVIDIA’s AIB partners. Since we have seen several custom graphics cards, which were based on the GeForce GTX 980 Ti chip, we expect similar in the case of the GTX 1080 Ti.
Depending on the clock speeds NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1080 Ti might be the fastest single-GPU graphics card available on the market. This particular pixel accelerator is based on the GP102-400A1 Pascal chip, which is the same that can also be found on the NVIDIA TITAN X Pascal. Furthermore there is a 352 bit memory interface in combination with GDDR5X memory. This means there will be 11 memory chips on the card and they will clock at 11 GHz (GDDR5X-effective). The theoretical memory bandwidth is 484 GB/s. As it's been with all the Pascal cards before, also the GTX 1080 Ti is only available - at the moment - in reference design, which means this card features the same cooler like the GTX 1080 Founders Edition.
Browsing the specifications of the GP102 chip we find a whopping 3584 CUDA cores, 224 TMUs and 88 ROPs. For comparison reasons, the TITAN X Pascal features 3584 CUDA cores, 224 TMUs and 96 ROPs. This means that, compared to the fastest card in the NVIDIA line-up the new GTX 1080 Ti features only few ROPs less. Looking at clock speeds we find a base clock set to 1'500 MHz and the boost clock is at 1'600 MHz, which in combination with the number of CUDA cores is going to pack some serious performance.
Since the card offers excellent overclocking potential, we might very soon see overclocker breaking the 2GHz barrier with these new cards. A quick look at the power connectors reveals an 8-pin and a 6-pin power connector and TDP is supposed to be 220W.
Nvidia also announced that it’s lowering the price of the Geforce GTX 1080 to 499 USD. The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti will be priced 699 USD and will be released next week.
