AMD announce RX Vega series of GPUs

The new flagship

AMD has announced their RX Vega series of GPUs, which is going to replace the R9 Fury lineup. This new series of GPUs was announced at AMD's Capsaicin and Cream Event during the GDC, alongside their new "V for Vega" logo designed by AMD's Raja Koduri himself. The R9 Fury series was launched in summer 2015 therefore it’s about time we see something new and fast from AMD.

At the moment AMD has not yet shared any additional details, nevertheless they’ve been talking about the effects of the HBM cache as well as the HBM2 graphics memory is going to have. During their Capsaicin & Cream event, AMD explained that the High Bandwidth Cache Controller (HBCC) is supposed to increase game performance significantly. To prove that the company did a side-by-side test comparing two running sessions of "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided". The system that was using HBCC showed twice the amount of minimum FPS and 1.5x higher average FPS scores.

AMD also demonstrated that the HBCC already shows promising increases if the graphics card only features 2GB video memory. For that purpose the again had two systems ready, one with 2GB of video memory and the HBCC and another with 4GB and no HBCC. As a result, the card with less video memory was able to perform on par with the one that featured twice the amount.

AMD has also shown their new Vega logo, which is a “V”. We've already shown that to you last week since it was visible during a past Ryzen event. At this point in time it is unknown how well Vega will perform or how this GPU will be priced, leaving consumers with nothing more than a name and a logo. With Vega, AMD is about to change the architecture of all the GPUs and it looks very interesting. Nevertheless we still need to understand how this aspect will impact the final performance.
