Although the acclaimed launch date will be somewhen during or after CES 2017 news leaks related to Kaby Lake are making it through almost every day. This time expreview.com jumped the gun and their testing was conducted on an Intel Z270 series motherboard with an Intel Core i7-7700K and 8GB of DDR4-2133 memory.


The first batch of benchmarks shows the difference at default clocks between the Core i7-7700K and the Core-i7-6700K in single- and multi-threaded applications. These new tests confirm what we’ve already seen with all the other leaks. The Core i7-7700K is on average 7.40% faster in single-threaded and 8.88% faster in multi-threaded applications compared to the Core i7-6700K. Since the boost clock on the new i7-7700K is 7% higher than with the 6700K Skylake such a result was to be expected.

In a second step the guys over at expreview.com set the speed of both CPUs to 4.0GHz. The results gathered in 11 CPU benchmarks appear to be quite disappointing since the Core i7-7700K is 0.86% slower in single-threaded and 0.02% slower in multi-threaded applications. Since the benchmarks were performed on a Z270 motherboard it's possible that the BIOS is still not ready to provide solid performance.

In addition they did also ran a few 3D tests in using 3DMark, Civilization: Beyond Earth and GTA V. The test setup is based on a Nvidia GTX 1070 graphics card and shows a tiny difference between the two systems. Only in 3DMark, checking the physics routine, there is an advantage of 9.21% for the i7-7700K.

So far it looks like Kaby Lake won't be a big upgrade coming from Skylake, yet it seems to be an interesting option should own an older generation Intel mainstream platform.
