According to the latest report, it appears that samples of Intel's 3D XPoint memory might be coming soon but it will take some time before it enters mass production.
According to IM Flash (Intel and Micron joint venture) executive, Guy Blalock, 3D XPoint samples might be "just around the corner."
In an interview with EETimes, Blalock noted that it will also take 12 to 18 months before 3D XPoint memory goes into mass production.
In case you missed it earlier, 3D XPoint was announced back in July last year by Intel and Micron as the new non-volatile memory, which promises high-performance, high-endurance and high-capacity, all the an affordable cost.
Intel also announced that it will use 3D XPoint memory for its upcoming line of Intel Optane SSDs and judging from earlier prototypes, which promised over 7.25x more performance, 3D Xpoint is definitely an interesting technology.
The 3D XPoint memory also brings plenty of problems as it uses as many as 100 new materials, raising supply chain issues and it needs 3 to 5x increase in capital expenses compared to prior generations of flash, according to Blalock.
