HGST, a Western Digital subsidiary, has launched its newest helium filled Ultrastar hard disk drive (HDD), the 10TB Ultrastar He10.
Previously available in capacities of up to 8TB, HGST has now left Seagate in the dust by announcing and launching the new Ultrastar He10 HDD which uses traditional perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology and HGST's HelioSeal technology, which means that platters are hermetically sealed in an enclosure filled with helium rather than air. The new HGST 10TB Ultrastar He10 HDD also uses 7Stac, which means it has seven platters packaged in the same 1-inch form factor used by traditional 3.5-inch HDDs.
HGST already had helium filled 10TB HDD but this HDD, launched back in June 2015, is a part of HGST's Archive Ha series which uses shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology, not suitable for constant usage.
According to HGST, packing the drive in helium as well as some other improvements, allow the Ultrastar He10 to consumer 43 percent less power compared to 8TB air-based HDDs and also offer 25 percent more capacity. This also allowed HGST to rate the helium filled HDDs with 2.5 million hour MTBF, 25 percent higher than any other HDD on the market and are backed by a 5-year warranty.
According to specifications, the Ultrastar He10 will be available in SATA 6Gbps and SAS 12Gbps versions and offer sustained transfer rates of 237/215 MB/s and will have plenty of enterprise features like Secure Erase, Self-Encrypting/TCG Drives and RAID Rebuild Assist mode. The SATA 6Gbps version of the Ultrastar He10 uses 5 and 6.8 Watts in idle and active modes (5.8/9.5 Watts for the 12Gbps SAS version).
HGST also used this opportunity to brag that it has managed to ship over 4 million HelioSeal HDDs. While helium filled HDDs from HGST are usually a bit pricier compared to standard HDDs, these offer lower TCO (total cost of ownership) due to their lower power consumption and highest capacity.
Unfortunately, HGST did not announce the precise price of the new Ultrastar He10 HDD but you can expect it to retail at around US $800 considering that the Ultrastar He8 has dropped down to around US $550.
