Sony unveils Xperia Z5 Premium at IFA 2015

The first 4K screen smartphone

Sony came to IFA 2015 show with quite a surprise and announced the world's first smartphone with a 4K/UHD display, the flagship Sony Xperia Z5 Premium.

Based around a 5.5-inch 4K/UHD 3840x2160 IPS Triluminos Display, which adds up to 806 PPI of pixel density, the Xperia Z5 Premium is the true flagship that we have been waiting from Sony. With precise dimensions set at 154.4x76x7.8mm and a stainless steel frame, the Xperia Z5 Premium is quite a sleek looking smartphone. To be available in Black, Gold and Chrome colors, the Xperia Z5 Premium is also IP65/68 certified which means it is both dust- and water-proof.

Powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 SoC with 3GB of RAM, the Xperia Z5 Premium should handle 4K content pretty easily and if 32GB of internal storage is not enough for you, you can add more via microSD card slot. It has a non-removable 3430mAh battery which should keep it alive for around two days and supports Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0 tech. The rest of the specifications are pretty standard as you get 802.11ac dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, all the usual sensors, and it runs on Andorid 5.1 OS.

The main rear camera has been updated from previous Xperia Z series smartphone as it features a new 1/2.3" Exmor RS sensor with 23MP resolution which is placed behind a Sony G Lens with f/2.0 aperture. It can capture 4K videos with 3,200 ISO or take photos with 12,800 ISO. It also comes with a special focus that needs only 0.03 to focus and should produce some amazing pictures and videos. The front camera features an Exmor R sensor with 5-megapixel resolution and a 25mm wide-lens. It can record 1080p video.

In addition to the slightly different look, the new Sony Xperia Z5 Premium has a redesigned Power Key which now has a fingerprint sensor as well.

According to Sony, the new Xperia Z5 should launch globally in November and will cost around €799 in Europe/£629 in the UK. While the price sounds a bit steep, bear in mind that this is the only 4K/UHD smartphone on the market.
