At its Utopia in Progress event at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 in Barcelona, HTC has unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the HTC One M9.
Keeping the same 5-inch 1920x1080p screen from the HTC One M8, HTC decided not to reinvent the HTC One but rather just refine it and give it a more premium look and feel with the HTC One M9. The new flagship HTC One M9 comes with a "dual-tone metal unibody" and measures at 144.2x69.3x9.6mm with 157g of weight. These dimensions make the HTC One M9 a bit shorter and narrower compared to the One M8 but also heavier and thicker.
While it did keep the same 5-inch 1920x1080 screen seen on the HTC One M8, the HTC One M9 packs a bit more punch thanks to a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC. Based on an octa-core design with 64-bit Cortex-A57 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5GHz, Adreno 430 GPU and 3GB of memory, the HTC One M9 should offer much better experience compared to the One M8.
In addition to the new Snapdragon 810 SoC, HTC also updated the camera, which is now a 20-megapixel Toshiba-made camera with sapphire-glass protection and dual LED flash. It can record 4K video and should be a lot better than the one on the HTC One M8. The front camera is now a 4-megapixel UltraPixel camera and should be good for selfies.
The HTC One M9 features all the usual connectivity options including LTE, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, 802.11ac WiFi, GPS, IR blaster and MHL 3.0 port. It packs 32GB of internal storage expandable via microSD card slot and will run on 2840mAh battery, which is a nice boost compared to the HTC One M8.
The recognizable BoomSound speakers are still there and now support Dolby Audio and the new One M9 is running on Android 5.0 Lollipop OS with HTC Sense 7 UI.
The HTC One M9 will be available in four color options, Silver, Gunmetal Grey, Gold and Pink and will have plenty of covers including the Dot View smart cover.
While HTC did not talk about the price, it did note that the HTC One M9 should be available in mid-March. Recent leaks and listings suggested that it should have a US $649.99 price tag.
