During its Unpacked press event at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 in Barcelona, Samsung has unveiled its two new flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge.
Since both new Galaxy smartphones are pretty much based on the same specifications, with 5.1-inch Super AMOLED screen, protected by Corning Gorlla Glass 4, with Quad HD (2560x1440) resolution and 577ppi density as well as Samsung own Exynos 7420 SoC, most eyes were focused on the Galaxy S6 Edge, which, unlike the earlier released Galaxy Note Edge, has display bent on both sides of the smartphone.
The main focus is the design, as Samsung decided to change quite a few things compared to its previous Galaxy S flagship smartphones. Both the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge are now based on a dual-glass design with a metal frame and although these are not dust and water proof, they sure look nice.
As expected and rumored earlier, both the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge are powered by Samsung's own Exynos 7420 SoC with octa-core 64-bit CPU with four Cortex-A57 cores clocked at 2.1GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5GHz. It also features a Mali-T760 GPU and in case of both the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge, comes paired up wtih 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM.
The rest of the shared features on Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge include new ISOCELL 16-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization, autofocus and LED flash, while selfies will be taken care by a 5-megapixel camera which now has a 43 percent bigger sensor, which should give better pictures in low light scenarios. Both smartphones also have all the standard connectivity options including LTE Cat.6, Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, GPS, IR blaster and FM radio.
Both smartphones have retained the hardware Home key which now has a fingerprint sensor, something that was needed for Samsung Pay, which company talked a lot during the Unpacked press event. It relies on NFC and Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) for mobile payments. It has already been certified by some big players including Visa and Mastercard, while the rest should follow soon.
Both smartphones will be available with 32, 64 and 128GB of internal storage, which is not expandable via microSD card slot, a first when it comes to Galaxy S flagship smartphones. The storage is now UFS 2.0 which borrows some technology from SSDs and which should make it faster than regular eMMC storage. Samsung has now partnered up with Microsoft for cloud storage and will offer 115GB of free OneDrive storage for 2 years on Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones.
The Galaxy S6 comes with a 2550mAh battery while the Galaxy S6 Edge has a 2600mAh one. Another novelty is that the battery is the non-removable, or integrated, battery in both new smartphones, which is yet another first for Galaxy S flagship smartphones. As expected, both smartphones will be running on Android 5.0 Lollipop with TouchWiz UI.
The Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge will be available in Charcoal Black, Copper Gold, Electric Blue and Shimmery White color options.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge will both be available in 20 countries on April 10th. While Samsung did not officially announce the price for either of the new Galaxy S flagship smartphone, recent rumors and listings suggest we could see a starting price of around €700 for the Galaxy S6 32GB and around €850 for the Galaxy S6 Edge 32GB, all in Europe and without contract.
