Windows 10 to be free for Windows 7, 8/8.1 users

Coming as a free upgrade

As it was rumored earlier and now confirmed at the last night event, Microsoft's upcoming Windows 10 OS will be free for current Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 as well as Windows Phone users.

According to what we had a chance to hear last night, it appears that this is pretty much a promotion that will be available only during the first year of release for Windows 10 and is a move by Microsoft to push Windows 10 on as many systems as possible.

The promotion was announced last night by Terry Myerson, Microsoft's executive VP for operating systems, adding that Windows 10 is "much more than a free, one-time upgrade. With Windows 10, we think of Windows as a service." He also added that the new Windows 10 OS will redefine the relationship between Microsoft and its customers.

Microsoft is putting a lot of fate in its new Windows 10 OS and certainly wants users to switch to the new OS as it will be easier to push out updates for it.

While we still do not have an official launch date, Windows 10 is expected to launch before the end of the year and for now, the new OS looks pretty good. Currently, Windows 10 is in its Technical Preview stage while those that are a part of Microsoft Insider program will be able to get the latest build as of next week.
