Samsung starts manufacture of Apple's A9 chip

On 14nm FinFET manufacturing technology

Samsung has finally started producing chips on 14nm FinFET manufacture, and although it is not a big surprise, it is the Apple A9 chip, which will be the heart of any future iPhone or iPad device coming next year.

The report, which confirms earlier reports that Samsung has won the business to manufacture Apple's new A9 chip, comes from Korea and suggest that the company has started manufacturing these chips in the Austin plant in the USA.

The chip will be made on newest 14nm FinFET manufacturing process and said to use 35 percent less power to run as well as have 20 percent more processing power. According to details, the chip should be 15 percent smaller, when compared to 20nm chips, which should be ideal for Apple's newest smartphone, the iPhone.

While we are not expecting a new iPhone or iPad before late 2015, it is most likely that these first chips will be used in prototype testing rather than full production models.

Recent reports suggest that there will be plenty of 14nm chips next year and Qualcomm might be first on the market with its new LTE modem.
