Samsung has announced that it managed to overcome the barriers in making the 60GHz WiFi ready for commercialization. According to Samsung, the new 60GHz WiFi technology will enable transmission speeds of up to 4.6Gbps, or 575MB/s.

According to Samsung, the new 60GHz WiFi technology and theoretical transfer speeds of up to 4.6Gbps, or 575MB/s, represent a five-fold increase from the 866Mbps, or 108MB/s, which is a maximum transfer speed possible with existing consumer devices. This five-fold increase will allow a 1GB movie to be transfered between devices in less than three seconds and even allow for uncompressed high-definition videos to be streamed between devices in real-time.

According to Samsung, unlike existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi technologies, the new Samsung 802.11ad 60GHz WiFi standard maintains maximum speed by eliminating co-channel interference, regardless of the number of devices on the same network, allowing for speeds that are more than 10 times faster than 2.4GHz or 5GHz WiFi standard.

The new Samsung 802.11ad 60GHz will also improve signal performance, by developing wide-coverage beam-forming antenna as well as leveraging millimeter-wave circuit design and high performance modem technologies.

Unlike the 2.4GHz and 5GHz spectrum, the 60GHz is an unlicensed band spectrum and Samsung expects commercialization as early as next year and also plans to apply this new technology to a wide range of products, including audio visual and medical devices, as well as telecommunications equipment. The technology will also be a key part of development relevant to the Samsung's Smart Home and other IoT (Internet of Things) devices.
