Sniper Elite III gets support for AMD Mantle

Better performance, lower CPU overhead

Rebellion, developer behind the latest Sniper Elite III game, has announced a new patch that brings AMD's Mantle support to the Sniper Elite III game, thus bringing better performance as well as lower CPU overhead.

In a blog post, Rebelion's head of programming, Kevin Floyer-Lea, has revealed some details regarding the implementation of the AMD Mantle API with Sniper Elite III Asura engine as well as some details regarding the actual performance and lowered CPU overhead in the "Siwa" level, which is one of the graphically demanding levels in the Sniper Elite III.

According to Rebellion, and in addition to performance test slides, the new AMD Mantle API support in the Sniper Elite III will bring improved frame rate, reduced CPU power consumption, which is good for notebooks, ability to make the game less susceptible to frame rate spikes when other programs hit the CPU, ability to increase scene and world complexity as well as an ability to increase CPU budget for other game systems like the AI. While some of these will directly influence the Sniper Elite III game, some are more aimed at future games.

According to Rebellion, the performance improvements are not great but as you can see from the slides, it should be quite noticeable.

In any case, implementation of the Mantle API in the Asura engine is definitely a good way forward so hopefully we will see even more games with Mantle support.
