DirectX 12 coming with Windows 10

Confirmed by Microsoft

Microsoft has now confirmed that the final version of Windows 10 will be coming with DirectX 12. Developers will be able to develop software by using DirectX 12 Early Access membership and Windows 10 Technical Preview.

On its DirectX Developer Blog, Microsoft has confirmed that the final version of Windows 10 will be indeed coming with DirectX 12. Developers will be able to develop software by using DirectX 12 Early Access membership and Windows 10 Technical Preview and will, according to Microsoft, "receive everything they need to kickstart their DX12 development, including: updated runtime, API headers, drivers, documentation, and samples".

Microsoft also announced that it has been working together with Epic to make a DirectX 12 port of the Unreal Engine v4 which is now available in the UE4 GitHub repository and supports the latest Unreal Engine, UE 4.4. Intel has previously showed off a DirectX 12 Asteroids demo during Siggraph and the source code for it will be a part of DirectX 12 Early Access Program.

While AMD has its Mantle API, Microsoft is probably a bit more close with Nvidia at the moment but did note on its blog that it has "great working relationships with all graphics vendors".

Microsoft also noted that the public SDK for DirectX 12 will be available at a later date, while for now this one will be limited to Early Access membership program.
