Silicon Motion annonces a new SD cards controller

UHS-II Class 3

While a few manufacturer, like SanDisk, are announcing the first UHS-I Class 3 SD cards, Silicon Motion is way ahead, and today the announced the first UHS-II Class 3 controller for SD cards.

Silicon Motion presented the new SM2704 controller, which will be compatibile with UHS-II SD cards, and UHS Speed Class 3 standard.

It will be compatible with most NAND chip available on the market, and the first tests showed a maximum speed of 280MB/s in reading, and 260MB/s in writing, which is actually three times faster than what we have now, 95/90 MB/s.

Anyway, we are talking about professional SD cards, and Lexar is already working on a few solutions, like the PRO 2000x and the PRO 1000x, that should be ready for the Photokina event in Cologne, 18th to 21st October.
