Activision has announced that its newest published, and definitely one of the most anticipated games so far, Destiny, managed to earn US $500 million in sales on its first day of release.
This news coming from Activision pretty much means that the game managed to earn all the money that Activision as a publisher spent on title between development and marketing and also makes it “the biggest new video game franchise launch in history,” according to Activision. Activision Publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg, said that he had confidence in the IP and Bungie from the beginning stating that they "have been confident that our investment and belief in Destiny would pay off, but not many people believed we’d be able to say it did so on day one."
The announced number includes all the pre-ordered copies as well as those that were bundled with the Playstation 4 consoles and pretty much makes the Destiny on of the highest-selling digital console releases of all time.
Activision still has to earn back the money it actually spent on marketing the game, which is rumored at around US $500 million as well, but considering this big interest in the game when it launched we are quite sure that it will have no trouble achieving that as well. Activision is expected to post its latest financial results in October and we are quite sure that Destiny will be a big part of that.
In case you somehow managed to miss it, the game launched on September 9th for Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
