According to the latest report Nvidia is expected to launch its next desktop Geforce GTX lineup under GTX 900 series name and completely skip the GTX 800 series. This is not the first time Nvidia is skipping a "naming order" as it did a similar thing with the GTX 300 series. According to the same report, Nvidia GTX 970 and the GTX 980 are the next big thing and should launch by mid-September.
The upcoming Geforce GTX 900 series, including the GTX 970 and the GTX 980 will be based on Nvidia's Maxwell architecture and the new GM204 GPU. There have already been some rumors regarding the GM204 and we have already seen the Maxwell architecture in action on mid-range GTX 750 and GTX 750 Ti graphics cards.
The skipped GTX 800 series could still be around but only for OEMs and as mobile-GPU parts and will be based on both Maxwell and Kepler GPU architecture.
According to
Videocardz.com, Nvidia is expected to launch or at least announce the new GTX 970 and the GTX 980 graphics card on the 9th or 10th of September, at various press events around the world, while formal launch should be on 19th of September.
