Samsung officially unveils the Gear S smartwatch

Coming in October, no word on the price

Getting ready for the IFA 2014 show, Samsung has now officially announced its newest Gear S smartwatch which will be based on Tizen OS, have 3G connectivity and be designed around a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED screen.

While not pursuing the round shape as most manufacturers, Samsung has decided to use a a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED 480x360 resolution screen for its premium Samsung Gear S smartwatch. The device will be powered by still unknown 1GHz dual-core CPU paired up with 512MB of RAM. What makes it stand out of the crowd is its quad-band 2G/3G connectivity which allows it to function as a stand-alone device as well as make and receive calls without connecting to a smartphone.

The rest of the specifications include 4GB of internal storage, Bluetooth 4.1, 802.11abgn WiFi, GPS/GLONASS, USB 2.0, accelerometer, gyroscope, heart rate monitor, and rest of the sensors, IP67 water and dust resistance and a 300mAh battery which should keep it alive for around 2 days of normal usage, according to Samsung.

The precise dimensions of the Gear S are set at 39.8x58.3x12.5mm which makes it a bit thicker than what we would like but nevertheless, it still looks quite good. As noted, the Gear S will be based on Tizen OS rather than Google's Android Wear and it should be available all around the world in October.

Unfortunately, some details, including the price, are still unknown but hopefully we will hear more during IFA 2014 show.
