Intel announces SSD Pro 2500 series SSDs

Sandforce controller paired up with SK Hynix NAND

Intel has officially announced a new addition to its SSD Pro lineup, the Intel SSD Pro 2500 series which will be based on the same Sandforce controller, 20nm SK Hynix NAND and 6Gbps SATA interface, making it suitable for entry level business oriented SSD market.

The new Intel SSD Pro 2500 series is quite similar to the previously available SSD Pro 1500 lineup, despite the new SK Hynix NAND, as we are pretty much looking at the same performance levels. The only difference is in addition to new low-power states which are designed for Intel's upcoming Broadwell platform. As you can see from the slide below, the performance figures are set at up to 540/490 MB/s for sequential read and write as well as up to 48k/80k IOPS for random read and write performance.

The biggest surprise is most likely the use of SK Hynix NAND instead of going for the NAND produced by Intel/Micron joint venture but we guess that it might have something to do with high demand which forced Intel to look for third-party supplier.

As you can see from the same slide below, Intel's SSD Pro 2500 series will be available in 2.5-inch 7mm form-factor in capacities ranging from 120GB to 480GB, M.2 80mm form-factor in 180, 240 and 360GB capacities as well as the M.2 60mm form-factor in 180 and 240GB capacities.

Intel's new SSD Pro 2500 series SSDs will have a five-year warranty which is quite standard for business-oriented products and also will feature 256-bit AES encryption support, IEEE and TCG Opal specification compliance as well as support for Intel's vPro.

The entire new Intel SSD 2500 series lineup should be already available for business market with a price which is definitely higher than standard consumer SSDs due to longer warranty as well as validation testing.
