Moving away from its typical announcements of the new Android OS releases, Google has announced a developer preview of its upcoming Android L release OS during Google I/O 2014.


As you all probably remember, Google usually announced new versions of Android OS during previous Google I/O events and made them available almost immediately but, this time around, it has only announced the developer preview of the Android L. The Android L, which final name and the version number will be announced at a later date, brings a bunch of new changes to the UI and most importantly, brings the new ART runtime environment, which will have better memory benefits, have support for 64-bit, and allow apps to run faster and be compatible with ARM, X86 and MIP architectures.

As far as the UI is concerned, developer that get the Android L developer preview will have a chance to play with the refreshed status bar, smoother transition animations, new dialer, better notifications which will now be shown on the lockscreen as well, and almost any other part system.

The new Android L also brings an update Chrome browser and will also introduce the Project Volta, a way to increase battery performance. It also features a new Battery Save mode, which, according to the presentation, will get you extra 90 minutes on the Nexus 5.

While this is still just a developer preview there is obviously a lot of things to look forward to and, according to Google, we can expect first end-user OTA updates sometime in Fall.
