Intel's desktop roadmap updated as well

More details for the next year

During its presentation at the 3D Revolution 2014 conference in Rome, Italy, Intel has revealed its update desktop CPU roadmap as well, which sheds a bit more light on the company's plans for the next year.

The list starts off with the HEDT platform where Intel plans to keep the current Ivy Bridge-E lineup until the end of Q3 2014, when it plans to launch the Haswell-E CPUs. The new Haswell-E HEDT platform will include the new socket LGA2011-3 CPUs and come with Intel's X99 Express chipset with support for the DDR4 memory. The Haswell-E HEDT platform will be the performance king until Q3 2015, when Intel plans to launch the Broadwell-E CPUs, based on 14nm manufacturing process.

The mainstream desktop CPU lineup is also quite interesting and although Intel recently launched the new Haswell Refresh CPU lineup and prepares to launch the Devil's Canyon unlocked versions on the 25th of June, the 14nm Broadwell chips, which are optical shrink of Haswell CPUs, based on pretty much the same architecture with minor tweaks and speed improvements, will launch in Q1 2015, most likely at CES 2015. The Broadwell CPUs will use existing 9-series chipsets.

In mid-2015, Intel plans to introduce its next-generation Core Skylake CPUs. According to details, the Skylake is a mere 6 months apart from Broadwell which probably means that we will not see an unlocked versions before 2016, so those looking for unlocked, overclockable versions, will be stuck with Broadwell. As it will be based on a new architecture, the Skylake will also bring the new LGA1151 socket which will be incompatible with the LGA1150.

The ultra-low power desktop lineup, also known as the U-series, will also get an update as Intel plans to introduce Broadwell based BGA chips in next few months. In mid-2015, these will be replaced by Skylake BGA chips.

The entry-level J-series lineup is also interesting as Intel plans to get rid of the Atom brand, while Celeron and Pentium BayTrail-D CPUs will exist until late December while the new Braswell-D is expected to launch in early 2015.
