As expected and announced earlier, Oculus has now opened up pre-orders for its consumer version of the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset, pricing it at a rather high US $599.
While Oculus has earlier said that the price would be indeed higher than US $349, everyone was surprised by a rather high price of the Oculus Rift VR headset, set at US $599 in the US, €699 in Europe and and £499 in the UK, especially considering the fact that it does not come with Oculus Touch controllers but rather just an Xbox Wireless controller. The bundle also includes the Rift headset, sensor, Oculus Remote and two free games, Lucky's Tale and EVE: Valkyrie.
Oculus Touch controllers have been previously delayed to 2H 2016 and those that pre-order the Oculus Rift headset will have a chance to be the first in line for the Oculus Touch when it launches.
It appears that despite its high price, Oculus Rift pre-orders have been doing well as first batch, set to ship by March 28th has been sold out in a matter of minutes, pushing the ship date to April.
In addition to the Oculus Rift VR headset, users will need a rather powerful PC system, with minimm hadware specification including an Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 graphics card, at least an Intel Core i5-4590 CPU, 8GB of RAM and three USB 3.0 ports.
Judging by some of the first reactions, the price might be a bit too steep but Oculus Rift is still selling well.
