MWC 2014: Samsung unveils its new Exynos SoCs

Exynos 5422 and Exynos 5260

Although Samsung was pretty silent regarding the Exynos SoC which will be behind the second version of the new Galaxy S5 flagship smartphone, the company has now unveiled its two new Exynos SoCs and one of them might be behind the Galaxy S5.

The first in line is the Exynos 5422 SoC, which is an octa-core and is clocked at 2.1GHz for the four Cortex A15 cores and 1.5GHz for the four Cortex A7 cores. As you might have noticed, the new Exynos 5422 is a mere speed bump compared to the Exynos 5 Octa seen last year. The Exynos 5422 support the ability to use all eight cores at the same time, something that Samsung has been announing for quite a while.

The new chip supports Samsung's big.LITTLE HMP (Heterogeneous Multi Processing) and should be up to 34 percent faster than the Exynos 5 Octa, at least according to Samsung.

The second announced SoC is the Exynos 5260, also known as the Exynos 5 Hexa. It is actually the same SoC which is behind the recently announced Galaxy Note 3 Neo and features six CPU cores, or precisely two high-performance Cortex A15 ones clocked at 1.7GHz and four 1.3GHz clocked Cortex A7 based cores.

Both the Exynos 5422 and the Exynos 5260 support high-resolution displays including Quad HD 2560x1440 and the QWXGA 2560x1600 while Exynos 5422 also supports 4K video recording.

The Exynos 5 Hexa 5260 is already in production, while the Exynos 5422 should enter mass production this quarter which means that we will see the Galaxy S5 with Exynos 5422 as early as April.
