Nvidia preparing new high-end mobile GPUs

The Geforce GTX 970MX and GTX 980MX

According to the newest report, Nvidia is working on two new high-end mobile GPUs, the Geforce GTX 970MX and the GTX 980MX.

According to a report coming from Korean site Hardware Battle, spotted by Videocardz.com, Nvidia is working on two new GM204 Maxwell-based mobile GPUs, the GTX 980MX and the GTX 970MX, which will both pack higher CUDA core count as well as higher clocks compared to the avaialble Geforce GTX 980M and the GTX 970M. The earlier unveiled Geforce GTX 980 Notebook will still remain the flagship mobile GPU in the lineup.

While Hardware Battle did not reveal any details regarding its source, it did reveal plenty of specifications for the two new rumored GPUS. The Geforce GTX 980MX, as apparently Nvidia has decided to name it, will also be based on Nvidia's well known GM204 GPU, pack 1664 CUDA cores, 104 TMUs and 64 ROPs. It is also clocked at 1048MHz for the GPU and comes with 4GB or 8GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 5000MHz and paired up with a 256-bit memory interface.

These specifications should make the GTX 980MX significantly faster compared to the currently available GTX 980M GPU, with 1536 CUDA cores and 1038MHz GPU clock.

The Geforce GTX 970MX will pack 1408 CUDA cores, 88 TMUs and 56 ROPs which makes it decent boost compared to the GTX 970M. It works at 941MHz GPU clock and comes with either 3GB or 6GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 5000MHz.

Unfortunately, Hardware Battle did not reveal any information regarding the TDP but we would not be surprised to see them end up with a the same TDP as the earlier available GTX 980M and the GTX 970M GPUs.

While there are no precise details, it is believed that Nvidia might officially launch these new mobile GPUs in Q2 2016, which means we could see plenty of new notebooks with these chips during Computex show which starts in late May.
