GlobalFoundries tapes out 14nm LPP FinFET node

Getting good yields

According to the latest report, GlobalFoundries has taped out its 14nm LPP (low-power plus) FinFET node and is claiming good yields on test chips.

As you know, GlobalFoundries has decided to go directly from 32nm to 14nm due to some problems with 28nm manufacturing node and according to the latest report from Expreview, it appears that this move will finally pay off. Providing test chips out puts GlobalFoundries closer to accepting orders for CPUs and GPUs.

AMD will probably be the biggest customer for GlobalFoundries and despite earlier reports that AMD has decided to also use TSMC and its 16nm FinFET manufacturing process for the upcoming Zen CPU architecture, it is most likely that bulk of it will go to GlobalFoundries.

Earlier rumors also suggested that AMD's Arctic Islands GPUs will be also built on GlobalFoundries' 14nm manufacturing process.

In any case, it appears that GlobalFoundries is on track to take orders for its first 14nm chips.
