Based on both Intel and AMD chipsets
During its last press event, held in Berlin, Asus has unveiled a few new Z97 motherboards. Back there, we had expect to see the new Maximus VII Formula and a new mini-ITX motherboard, but apparently ASUS has decided that the Computex 2014 show would be a much better place to show those kind of boards as it has just unveiled the new Maximus VII Formula, the Maximus VII Impact and the Crossblade Ranger motherboards.
The Computex 2014 show in Taipei is definitely the perfect occasion for a company to show off their crown jewels and try to cast a shadow over the competitors. ASUS did just that by unveiling two Intel LGA 1150 Z97 motherboards as well as a new AMD FM2+ based ROG motherboard.
The ASUS ROG Maximus VII Formula is a standard ATX board that capitalize on every feature brought by the new Z97 Express chipset. It features some sort of armor, much like the Sabertooth boards, but with a Republic of Gamer design and coloring. This board features four DDR3-3000 slots, six SATA III ports, two SATA Express, an M.2 port, three PCIe 3.0 x16 slots and three PCIe 3.0 x1. Integrated audio is handled by a SupremFX solution, with ELNA caps.
As far as mATX boards are concerned, we have already seen the Maximus VII Gene, but what we did not see, is the new ROG Maximus VII Impact mini-ITX motherboard. It features an 8+2-phase power design on an add-on card which stands vertically on the motherboard. Even the audio had the same treatment, a SupremFX 2014 chip, just under the Ethernet connection. Just an inch under that, we find the ComboIV WiFi 802.11ac module, that can be easily replaced by an M.2 SSD if you need it. Last but not the least, are the PCIe 3.0 x16 slot, two DDR3 slots (up to 16GB of RAM) and four SATA III ports.
As far as AMD is concerned, after the big ROG Maximus VII Ranger, ASUS showed off the new Crossblade Ranger based on FM2+ socket. It features three PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, two PCIe 3.0 x1 slots, a single standard PCI slot and eight SATA ports. It lacks both the M.2 and the SATA Express ports, and that is why it is a lot cheaper then her big sister.
Asus did not talk about prices or release dates, but we know these boards will come out during Q3 2014, so we guess we will hear more about them pretty soon.
