Although we have already seen a couple of leaks earlier, Nvidia has now officially announced its latest entry-level 700 series graphics card, the Geforce GT 740. The new GT 740 is based on the Kepler GK107 GPU and is pretty much a rebranded GT 640.
As noted, the Geforce GT 740 is based on well known 28nm GK107 Kepler GPU and feature 384 CUDA cores, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. It comes with either 1, 2GB or even 4GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 128-bit memory interface and it will also be available in similar DDR3 flavors as far as we can see from a couple of Nvidia AIB partner announcements.
Many Nvidia AIB partners have prepared a couple of different versions of the GT 740 and so far the GPU clock ranges from 933MHz all the way up to over 1200MHz on some versions. Since the TDP of the GT 740 is set at 64W, some versions will draw all the need power from the PCI-Express slot but some factory-overclocked versions with more 2GB or more memory will need a single 6-pin PCI-Express power connector.
While this is a sub US $100 entry-level graphics card we were quite surprised to see that the low-profile versions are quite rare and only a few partners decided to go for such a design while many are forcing high factory-overclock and even dual-slot cooling solutions.
In any case Nvidia now has a new rebranded graphics card which should be a decent alternative to integrated graphics solutions and AMD's A-series APUs.
