According to a report coming from ABI Research, an estimated 2.1 million of Chromebooks have been shipped in 2013 with nearly 89 percent of shipments in North America. According to the same report, the Chromebook shipments are expected to increase to 11 million in 2019 as they expand globally.
According to ABI Research, which tracked Chromebooks across six regions and found the average selling price to be at US $338, "this budget-driven device is a disruptive force to the portable PC market", said research analyst Stephanie Van Vactor.
In addition to Chromebooks, ABI Research also noticed that broader portable PC market is continuing its struggle to regain market growth. The ultraportable segment, powered by Windows 8 OS and available in 2-in-1 configurations, saw a minimal growth in Q4 2014, even with the holiday season.
According to ABI Research, the cost, connectivity and greater reliance on cloud services will be the driving force in growth for ultraportable PCs, and that is here Chromebooks definitely shine.
