In a quite a surprising turn of events, Facebook has announced its plans to acquire Oculus VR for around US $2 billion. While both Facebook and Oculus VR noted that this deal will not change anything, there are a lot of doubts from the industry as well as early and eager supporters of the Oculus VR.
According to Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the Oculus VR will be allow to operate individually and still focus on gaming. Oculus VR co-founders, Palmer Luckey and Brendan Iribe noted that this deal and Facebook will allow them to bring virtual reality to as many people as possible, in the best way possible and at the lowest possible price. According to same post, Facebook deal with Oculus VR will not change any things at the company and will just allow Oculus VR to "Connect a billion people with VR."
The deal, worth around US $2 billion, includes US $400 million in cash and 23.1 million Facebook shares currently worth around US $1.6 billion.
Whether these two companies share the same vision or not, supporters of the Oculus VR and those that have been the ones that originally supported it during the Kickstarter campaign, are definitely not happy with the deal. While Palmer Luckey did note that "we won't let you down" in its post at reddit, we certainly hope Facebook will not kill a new big thing like Oculus VR.
