Universal charger for mobiles becoming reality

Decision of the European Parliament

Last week, the European Parliament approved a draft legislation which will force manufacturers to standardize their chargers for same devices as well as make life easier for consumer and avoid growing amount of electronic waste.

The International Electrotechnical Commission already discussed the possibility of a single charger standard for smartphones and mobiles for quite some time and it took the European Parliament three years to get and deal with the issue.

The legislation draft was voted on and approved by majority during last week and member countries have to years to adapt the text in their countries while companies have additional year to adapt their products and comply to the rule. While the USB has already become a standard on most smartphone and it might be a start for a move on notebook power supply standard.

Only time will tell how will this impact the mobile sector and we certainly hope that it will be well received by manufacturers and eventually move to notebook sector.
