A few days back Intel announced their new Ivy Bridge-EX processors and it seems these new processors are not compatible motherboards that supported Ivy Bridge-EP. It seem there will be yet another version of the Socket LGA2011.
According to a report on ServeTheHome Ivy Bridge-EP processors are not compatible to the motherboards Ivy Bridge-EX is working on. The information is based on a picture, that shows four different CPUs, whereas one of them is a Haswell-EP chip. On the picture it looks like Ivy Bridge-EX has the notches at different positions and there also seem to be more contact spots.
This report then reveals there must be three different versions of Intel's socket LGA2011, which are LGA2011 offering compatibility to Sandy Bridge-EP and Ivy Bridge-EP. Other than that there is socket LGA2011-2, which is compatible to Ivy Bridge-EX and last but not least there will be socket LGA2011-3 where you can place Haswell-EP processors.
According to latest rumors Haswell-EP is expected to hit the market in thrid quarter 2014.
