IBM looking to sell its chip business

TSMC denies rumors, Intel still silent

The information that IBM is planning to sell its complete chip business did not came as a big surprise and most rumors were pointing at TSMC or Intel as potential buyers. According to latest information, TSMC is denying acquisition rumors while Intel is still quite silent regarding the matter.

Most information came from Chinese site MyDrivers.com, and it appears that TSMC is denying all such rumors which leaves us with Intel, and according to some less likely rumors, Global Foundries.

Intel would sound like a best bet despite the fact that it does not require any more plants and even put its Fab 42 on standby due to problem with capital. On the other hand, it is still not clear if IBM actually wants to sell its chip business altogether and it currently has two foundries, one at 300mm working at 22nm and one older foundry. TSMC could be a better suited candidate as it would push it closer to Intel.

In any case, we will surely keep an eye on the situation as IBM plants are surely interesting for many other buyers as well.
