Twitch: From 3 to 45 millions viewers

Next-gen consoles to blame

It looks like Twitch.tv is experiencing huge growth these days. Back in 2011, when the service was launched, the platform counted 3.2 million unique viewers. This number climbed to an astonishing 45 million during December last year.

A closer look the the numbers from Twitch.tv make clear how impressive the platform meanwhile is. There are more than 900'000 unique broadcasters, which produce no less than 12 billion minutes of watched content. In case of watched minutes per visitor per day, these are 106.

The reason, why Twitch.tv is growing rapidly these days is the launch of next-gen consoles. According to Twitch.tv, there have been 125'000 PS4 owners signing in to Twitch.tv one month after the launch, which accounts for 10 percent of all broadcasters on Twitch.tv. On the 3rd of January Twitch.tv noticed, that the number of PS4 broadcasters is already up to 20 percent.

Quote:
When video game historians look back on gaming a decade from now, 2013 will be the year they cite as the tipping point of streaming, said Matthew DiPietro, VP of marketing. Every major event, publisher, developer, and media outlet in the gaming industry had a presence on Twitch, and streaming became an ever-present piece of the gaming experience.

And it’s only going to get bigger.
