Intel Haswell-E eight-core CPU coming in Q3 2014

Together with the Intel X99 Express chipset

According to a new report from Vr-Zone.com, Intel's Haswell-E processors will be released in Q3 2014 and will not be compatible with current X79 motherboards but will bring the new Intel X99 Express chipset.

The lineup will replace the current Ivy Bridge-E and Sandy Bridge-E CPUs and will not fit in the existing X79 LGA 2011 socket motherboards. The Haswell-E will also bring eight-core CPUs as well as quad-channel DDR4-2133 memory support. According to the report, 22nm Haswell-E will also be available in "X" and two "K" series parts and will be unlocked. The early samples that were pictured showed that the clock is set at 3.0GHz and since it is a high-end series CPU, it will feature eight-core design.

When compared to the currently available Intel X79 Express chipset, the mentioned X99 chipset will bring 10 SATA 6Gbps ports as well as native USB 3.0 support. Although the DDR4 memory and 22nm process are quite important, the main question lies in the actually usability of eight-cores in any scenarios and actual performance gain. While 22nm process as well as DDR4 will certainly have certain performance improvements or at least improvements when it comes to power consumption, octa-core desktop CPUs do not make much sense, at least not now.

Of course, we are still far away from Q4 2014 and we will certainly hear more about Intel's upcoming X99 Express chipset and Haswell-E CPUs.
