While announcing that it managed to ship more than 100 million Travelstar Z-series 7mm 2.5-inch HDDs, HGST, a Western Digital company announced the new 2.5-inch, 1TB, Travelstar Z5K1000 HDD.

According to HGST, the new Travelstar Z5K1000 HDD is the industry's fastest 7mm 5,400RPM HDD with best-in-class shock protection and aimed at thin, ultra-portable notebooks, Ultrabooks, external storage and even ultra-compact CE devices. It features SATA 6Gbps interface 32MB of cache as well as 1TB of capacity in a 7mm thin format, the Z5K1000 will certainly have a place on the market.

According to Brendan Collins, VP of product marketing at HGST, the 7mm 2.5-inch mobile market continues to be a strategic space for HGST and with the addition of the new 1TB Travelstar Z5K1000, HGST continues to offer broadest 5,400 and 7,200 RPM 7mm 2.5-inhc HDD portfolio.

An early adopter of the new Travelstar Z5K1000 is ASUS with its Asus Transformer Book Trio. According to IHS, the demand for thin HDDs should reach 140 million by 2017 and with the increased demand for ultra-thin PCs and tablets,

The Travelstar Z5K family comes in 1TB and 750GB capacities and while some are already shipping to OEMs, broader samples should be available in the channel during next month.
