In addition to organizing the launch day and shipping some samples to members of the press, AMD made sure to put a "couple" of Radeon R9 290X graphics cards in the right overclocking hands as well in order to take the Nvidia GTX Titan off the performance throne at HWBot.
AMD gave four R9 290X graphics cards to Russian overclocker known as Smoke, which managed to retake the 3DMark 11 Performance world record that was previously held by four Nvidia GTX Titan graphics cards. The previous score was set at P39,629 while the new one stands at a bit higher P41531. At its highest peak in 3DMark 11, four R9 290X graphics cards were running at 1435/1650MHz.
He also managed to break the 3DMark Vantage world record and take the title away from Kingpin and its 91219 marks score on two GTX Titan graphics cards and set it at a rather impressive 96500. While there is quite a difference between two and four graphics cards, it appears that only AMD GPUs work in four card configuration.
He also managed to get a rather impressive 3DMark FireStrike world record set at 34246 marks, previously held by Kingpin at 31998 and 8 Pack from the UK at 33704 marks.
It looks like AMD's R9 290X is not only cheaper and faster (at least in some cases) when compared to the GTX Titan, but also works quite well for overclocking.
