Reference AMD Radeon R9 290X taken apart

PCB and GPU in all its glory

Expreview managed to get their hands on HIS-branded reference design AMD Radeon R9 290X graphics card and take it apart showing the cooler, PCB, VRM and the GPU in all its glory.

The PCB packs the center placed Hawaii GPU, sixteen GDDR5 memory chips, 5+1+1-phase VRM with CPL-chokes, IR DirectFETs and IR VRM controller. Of course, the VRM draws power from 8+6-pin PCI-Express power connectors. Although you can's get much info from the actual PCB pictures it is quite obvious that there are no Crossfire connectors as it is all now done via PCI-Express interface.

The released set of pictures also show the blower-style cooler in all its glory including copper part that comes in contact with the GPU.

In any case, we will surely see more details as we draw closer to the official launch date.
