During Intel Developer Forum 2013, Intel noted that it can ship 14nm chips in 2013 but in reality, 14nm is 2014 product since that is when it will show up on retail/e-tail shelves.
Intel noted that it can ship some chips on 14nm this year, which naturally gives them the right to call it a 2013 product while it will be able to come up with 10nm chips in 2015. Of course, it is still not clear we will have the same time-frame as with 14nm but in any case you should expect 10nm in 2015.
If all goes well and according to plan, Intel plans to switch to 7nm manufacturing process in 2017. This relatively fast transitions will at least give Intel a fighting chance against other manufacturers in the tablet and smartphone market.
Intel is still quite strong in server, data center, PC and notebooks markets and those are definitely the ones that are keeping Intel alive. We are witnessing transition and a rapid development of the mobile tablet and smartphone markets and it is obvious that Intel wants to be a bigger part of it.
